The nervous system controls the entire body and chiropractic works on the nervous system, that's why there are many symptoms and conditions that may benefit from chiropractic care. While chiropractic is best known for providing relief from back, neck and joint pain it has also been effectively used for a wide variety of conditions including learning and behavioral disorders, headaches and chronic pain, dizziness and balance disorders, colic, ear infections and many other conditions.

Chiropractic Neurology

A chiropractic neurologist offers effective treatment options that do not involve the use of medications or surgery. It is a functional treatment for neck pain, low back pain, dizziness, vertigo, traumas, balance problems whiplash, neuropathies and more.

As a chiropractic neurologist, Dr. Brodkin, diagnoses and treats the nervous system. This noninvasive, holistic approach enables the doctor to treat symptoms that cut across several systems of the body, including cognitive, sensory/motor and limbic. Patients who suffer from disorders of the nervous system often find that the natural and holistic approach of Chiropractic Neurology leads to healing or a reduction of symptoms.

Digital Motion X-ray

Evaluating the spine in motion and being able to look at the axial skeletal move in real time enables Dr. Brodkin to evaluate abnormal spinal movement and ligament injuries. Injuries of this nature commonly occur in whiplash accidents and sports injuries.

Ligaments that are stretched in an accident, can cause severe and debilitating neck pain or headaches. This type of injury cannot be detected using ordinary x-rays. Standard x-rays can reveal breaks or gross dislocations. MRIs examine discs and soft tissue non-functionally. However, a Digital Motion X-ray reveals injuries that are evident only during motion. This breakthrough technology provides the information needed to correctly diagnose functional injuries.

Muscle and Nerve Testing

In order to help guide patient treatment, Dr. Brodkin uses EMG/NCV testing to evaluate nerve injury. This comprehensive neurodiagnostic testing can detect early neurological changes due to diabetes, carpal tunnel, neuropathies and radiculopathies.

Acupuncture

Therapeutic acupuncture has been used successfully to treat pain and a variety of disorders, including headache, backache, muscle spasms, and can be an effective analgesic. Acupuncture is the stimulation of a certain point or points on or near the surface of the body by the insertion of needles to prevent pain or to normalize bodily functions.

Massage Therapy

In some cases, massage therapy is recommended for relief of pain due to excessive tightness, often caused by stress or pain. It can stop spasms and cramps and promote relaxation. Massage can stimulate circulation in the blood vessels and lymph systems to remove toxins from the body. It can have a remarkable ancillary effect by creating a feeling of well being, resulting in a decrease in tension and anxiety.

Cold Laser

This low intensity laser light can reduce pain and inflammation. Cold lasers are also called low level lasers. Cold lasers are different from heat lasers that are used in many surgical procedures. Cold or low level lasers are used to stimulate, rather than destroy tissue. Cold laser emits visible light that is applied to the affected areas. Bundles of light energy are received within the cell membrane by specific energy photo acceptors. The increase in intra cellular energy results in physiological changes to affect several biological processes. Within the injured musculoskeletal tissue, low-level laser light enhances tissue to regenerate. The overall effects are decreased pain and inflammatory and increased range of motion.

A high percentage of the population take medication for back pain, joint pain, muscular aches, headaches/migraines, stiffness, sports and exercise pain. Chiropractic is an excellent alternative to medication for these problems.

Back and Neck Pain

A Great Britain Study showed the overall results of chiropractic manipulation were very encouraging for patients with disc herniations.

Many times, the spine is injured because it is more vulnerable in awkward positions, such as when we bend forward and add a little twist to a lift. Perhaps, it's putting a baby seat into the back seat, or pulling weeds in the garden. A spinal misalignment also called a subluxation means a vertebral joint of the spine is out of its normal position. Every day stresses and strains can cause subluxations along with more severe injuries from motor vehicle accidents and sports injuries.

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve on the palm side of the wrist. These same symptoms can be caused by nerve compression in the neck. That is why an examination of the neck and wrist are important when a person has carpal tunnel.

Headache and Migraine

Headaches, more than other types of pain, can have their causes far removed from the painful area. Often times the headache pain originates in the neck or it can be poor posture. Forward based head and shoulders can cause headaches. Chiropractors are specifically trained to analyze posture and correct it.

Balance Disorders

A good test to see if your balance is impaired is as follows: Can you stand on one leg for fifteen seconds? Is it equally easy to do this on the other leg or is one side easier to maintain your balance. Can you stand on one leg with your eyes closed? Obviously, you should try this very carefully. You may want to do this with a friend nearby so you do not fall. Do you immediately lean and have to put your other foot down? If you cannot stay upright it may be sign that position sense has been affected by a spinal problem.

Position sense or balance is how we keep upright and move through space. When it is disturbed we may feel unsettled, dizzy or even get nauseous. Many studies have shown that when the spine is injured, a person's balance can be affected. How is this so? Balance is maintained by a complex interaction between your inner ear, your eyes, and the nerves in your neck (Sports Med 2008; 38:101, Armstrong. et al.). When the neck or low back is injured you may use your eyes more to make up any position sense or balance deficits. About one third of older people suffer from balance disorders.

Whiplash

In any type of accident, many areas of the body can potentially be injured. If you are aware you are about to be hit, remain in a neutral position with your eyes facing forward. People with their head turned prior to the impact seem to have worse ligament injuries. Although whiplash injuries are quite common, research describes the diverse symptoms that can develop when the neck has been traumatized. Even minor sports injuries can have a significant impact on the delicate structure of the neck.

Sports Rehabilitation

Many athletes are now combining chiropractic with sport rehabilitation in order to heal injuries quickly and safely. Chiropractic can offer pain relief from injuries, which make rehabilitation and training exercises less painful. Dr. Brodkinís training in physical fitness enables him to suggest strengthening exercise, as well as, other forms of treatment that facilitate wellness. A treatment before a golf tournament has enabled some golfers to perform better.
